Interview Vidcast
The theme of this vidcast is about conducting and participating in an interview. This concept is spread throughout most of the grades in secondary education specifically in 9th grade. In the ninth grade core under the third standard and within the third objective of that standard it states, “Conduct interviews to support inquiry.” The indicators of that objective outline steps to success when conducting and participating in an interview.
The reason why we chose this theme is because interviews are an integral part of nearly everyone’s life. Interviews take place in someone’s life as early as 15 or 16 for their first job. This is part of the core that does not get as much attention as the rest because many teachers assume that the students already understand it. This is why it would be extremely beneficial to use this vidcast as a way a placing extra emphasis on something that often gets overlooked. This is also a great way to introduce research in general. Research is a form of the interview process. When a student approaches a text he or she should come with a similar attitude as approaching an interview. In both situations it is important to determine the purpose of the text and formulate questions based off of that. It is even beneficial to create a dialogue with the text. So the benefits of understanding the interview reach farther than what is on the surface; the knowledge gained can be applied to other areas.
The potential drawbacks of using this series in my classroom is that I would not be able to answer any immediate questions during the vidcast. When an instructor normally does direct instruction he or she can always stop to ask supplementary questions or to give time in between for questions. Another potential problem when doing a vidcast for something like this is the worry of accessibility. The goal of public education is to provide fair opportunities for all of the students to participate. Technology is a huge barrier for several students, mostly because of financial reasons. Because I am not a word processing instructor I would have to schedule the computer lab or another venue in order to make sure that all of my students had an opportunity to participate in the assignment as well as do some research on the internet to add on to what they are learning.
There are several places that I could go following this vidcast. I would start by creating vidcasts centered around the indicators of the core objective. Each one of those indicators contains several important elements of an interview that could be expanded for mini lessons. Once I have done that I would help the students draw the connection between interviews and research.
